Young people will live up to expectations, if given the opportunity. Many have no idea what success looks like, so how can they accomplish it? Maybe that’s why we have 1 in 4 blacks, 1 in 5 Hispanics and 1 in ten whites living in poverty. These people don’t need hand outs, they need a hand up. This situation will only improve if people become involved and aware of what’s happening in their own community. If you don’t consider it a human issue, then consider it a community financial issue.

Considering what our foundation gets for the students with grants and what we fund for those who don’t receive grants, the average cost per school year per student is under $3,000.00 per student. Now consider the cost of incarceration at anywhere from $40,000.00 to $60,000.00 per year, or consider the possibility of a lifetime of public assistance. What makes sense for the community?

Our Right Path Program is in Beaumont, TX and Milwaukee, WI. If we could get 10 percent of the community in Beaumont to donate $60.00 per year, $5.00 per month or 16 cents a day toward education, I believe we would be heading toward a model community. In Milwaukee, WI, if we could get just 3 percent of the community to donate the same amount of money as Beaumont, I believe we could put a new face on the north side of Milwaukee, where approximately 50 percent of the black male population in their 30s and below end up in jail or prison.

It’s time to get over being mad on crime and start getting smart on preventing crime in the first place.
